Coronavirus News: August 1 – California First State with 500,000 Cases, Infections Rise in Germany

California becomes first state to surpass 500,000 cases in troubling milestone as it broke the previous record for daily Covid-19 deaths.

In Germany, the number of new daily coronavirus cases topped 800 after remaining below 500 for weeks, the Robert Koch Institut said earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, the Canadian government is cracking down on those individuals who are traveling through the country to reach the state of Alaska.  Americans and visitors are allowed to traverse Canada in order to reach Alaska, which has no contiguous border with the United States.  The stricter measures are intended to discourage those travelers who want to visit the country’s national parks and landmarks and include marking a car’s rearview license plate with a date by which the vehicle must enter the United States.

A 54-year-old New Jersey woman who recently underwent a liver transplant and uses a cane to walk was attacked and pushed to the ground in a Staples office supplies store in New Jersey in a dispute that resulted from another customer’s refusal to wear a mask.

The additional $600 per week federal unemployment benefit that was a lifeline to many expired at midnight after the Senate and House of Representatives failed to come together to introduce a bill that would provide new relief measures.

The coronavirus swept through a sleepaway camp in Georgia.  Out of the 344 campers and staff for whom test results were made available, at least 260 – or 43% – were infected with the virus, although the Centers for Disease Control and Infection, which released information about the large outbreak, said the figure may very well be higher.

Officials in South Korea arrested the leader of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a secretive religious, sect on charges of embezzling church money and conspiring to impede the government’s efforts there to fight the pandemic.
