United Airlines said Wednesday that it would require passengers to don masks at all times in the airport.

“The most important thing any of us can do to slow the spread of the coronavirus is to simply wear a mask when we’re around other people,” said the airline’s CEO, Scott Kirby.

The airline said that passengers will be expected to have face masks on at its customer service counters and kiosks as well as in its lounges. Masks are also required at gates and baggage claim area.

United employees will offer masks to those passengers who do not have one.

Passengers who do not comply with the policy will at first be given a card detailing the airline’s mask policy.  Those who repeatedly refuse to comply will face a ban on flying.
