United Airlines announced the appointment of Sasha Johnson to the position of vice president of corporate safety.

Ms. Johnson is currently the airline’s managing director for international regulatory and policy matters.

The appointment, a promotion, will become effective on October 1, following the retirement of Michael Quiello, who currently holds the position.

“Sasha is a highly respected and well-established leader with a proven track record of navigating some of the most challenging safety and regulatory issues in our industry,” said Scott Kirby, the airline’s CEO, in a statement.

Mr. Quiello joined United 11 years ago and was instrumental in managing the process that resulted in the airline’s single operating certificate following the merger with Continental Airlines.

Ms. Johnson served as the Federal Aviation Administration’s chief of staff prior to joining United in 2015. She previously held the position of assistant administrator for communications at the FAA and press secretary at the Department of Transportation. Before her first government position, she was a producer at CNN from 1998 through 2009.
