In the United States, President Trump restarted his press briefings on the coronavirus pandemic. In his first televised appearance since April, he made an abrupt switch in his message about the coronavirus and said that the pandemic would likely get worse before there is a widespread recovery.

“It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better,” he said. “Something I don’t like saying about things, but that’s the way it is.”

The president implored people to wear masks, in what has been a departure from months of comments pooh-poohing their use since the start of the pandemic.

“Get a mask,” said Mr. Trump.  “Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They will have an effect and we need everything we can get.”
