LaGuardia Airport to Open Western Concourse, American’s New Base of Operations There
The next phase of the opening of the new LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal – the opening of the Western Concourse – will take place on August 5, 2020 when the first seven of 17 gates in the concourse go into operation.
The 218,000-square-foot (20,252-square-meter) will open in two phases because the remaining gates in the original terminal building will need to remain in operation while the remainder of the Western Concourse is completed. The concourse will serve as American Airlines’ base of operations at LaGuardia and will feature a large Admirals Club as well as a dedicated customer-service desk.
“Launching operations from the first phase of the Western Concourse is a milestone moment for American Airlines and brings us closer to a whole new LGA,” said Jim Moses, the airline’s vice president of northeast hubs and gateways.
The new concourse has similar design elements that are found in the Eastern Concourse, which opened in December 2018. It features a park with greenery and park benches, soaring ceilings up to 55’ (17 m), and much natural light. It will also feature two major pieces of New York City-inspired art. One piece, a colorful sculpture entitled “The Big Apple,” by Romero Britto, was gifted to American Airlines for display at LaGuardia in 2006. The artist has since restored the piece, which was inspired for his love of the city.
