Oneworld announced Wednesday that Royal Air Maroc, the flag carrier of Morocco, had officially joined the alliance.

“We’re pleased to welcome Royal Air Maroc to oneworld,” said Alan Joyce, the chairman of the alliance’s governing board and the CEO of Qantas, at a press conference in December 2018.

“Africa… has one of the fastest predicted air travel growth rates over the next few decade,” Joyce said at the event.

Royal Air Maroc is the alliance’s first member based on the African continent.  The new member will add 39 new destinations in 23 countries to the oneworld network.  In addition, starting April 1, members of frequent flyer programs of other oneworld airlines will be able to earn and redeem miles on Royal Air Maroc and also will have access to all oneworld benefits and services when flying with the airline, while the more than one million members of the airline’s frequent-flyer program, Safar Flyer, will be able to earn and redeem awards on all oneworld member airlines effective 1 April.

Royal Air Maroc was founded 60 years ago and has its hub at Mohammed V International Airport. The carrier has an extensive domestic network in Morocco and serves other countries in Africa as well as destinations in Asia, Europe, and North and South America. It currently operates a mostly Boeing fleet consisting of 55 aircraft.

The airline’s regional carrier, Royal Air Maroc Express, began flying as an affiliate member on Wednesday. This added 34 destinations and 11 countries that were not served by oneworld-member airlines.

American Airlines, one of the founding oneworld members, and Royal Air Maroc began a codeshare relationship on December 26 of last year. Other oneworld airlines with codeshare agreements with Royal Air Maroc are Iberia, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, and S7 Airlines.
