Review and Test Drive: 2020 Volvo XC90 T8 eAWD Plug-In Hybrid

While I’ve always admired Volvo from afar, it wasn’t until the launch of the new 90 Series, specifically the XC90 and the S90 that quickly followed it, that I actually lusted after one.

All 90 Series vehicles are built on the automaker’s global platform, SPA or Scalable Product Architecture. They all share numerous features and characteristics both inside and out, including a 9” tablet-like touch screen for infotainment and climate control and the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, which give all 90 Series vehicles a signature look.

We last looked at the XC90 a few years back, given that Volvo has kept us busy with an updated S90 and as well as all new XC60s, V90s, and XC40s, among others.

For 2020, the XC90 received a subtle update that includes a rather distinctive newly concave grille, updated front and rear fasciae, and new wheels, as well as a version that seats six.  The concave grille gives a subtle impression of movement, even when the vehicle is standing still.

Open the door and take a seat: you’ll find the XC90 seat’s contour accommodates all shapes and sizes and the bolsters are in just the right place.

Volvo is known for its excellent ergonomic seats and the XC90 is no exception.  Indeed, in my first XC90 review, I noted that the XC90 might be the press car most likely to be returned minus one front seat that was accidentally turned into a desk chair.
