British Airways is expected to announce that it will temporarily lay off 36,000 employees, although the timing of the announcement is not certain.

The news comes after the airline cancelled all flights from London Gatwick on Tuesday and, earlier, London City Airport.

The airline is reportedly negotiating the move with Unite, the British and Irish trade union that represents many of its employees. The two sides are said to be close to an agreement, sources said.

The British flag carrier has seen demand plummet amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Sources expect 80% of the airline’s flight attendants, ground staff, and others including those working at the airline’s headquarters to be furloughed but no employees are expected to be fired.

BA previously reached a deal with its pilots to pay them 50% of their salaries in lieu of any layoffs.

Employees who are furloughed should be covered by U.K. government’s plan to pay those impacted by the pandemic 80% of their wages up to £2,500 ($3,097).
