The Environmental Protection Agency released a list of disinfectants that can be used to fight the coronavirus.

Germs can live on surfaces for days so wiping down surfaces on airplanes such as tray tables, touch screens, door handles, buttons, and faucets is particularly important. The same goes for armrests and the back of the seat in front of you in a theater, and the table at a food hall or fast-food restaurant.

One study found that viruses such as SARS can stay on metal, glass, and plastic surfaces for up to nine days.

The list includes products from Clorox, Lysol, and Purell.  The products have “qualified for use against Covid-19” via the agency’s Emerging Viral Pathogan program.  Data provided by the manufacturers shows that these products “are effective against harder-to-kill” viruses.

“Using the correct disinfectant is an important part of preventing and reducing the spread of illnesses along with other critical aspects such as hand washing,” said Andrew Wheeler, the EPA’s administrator.

Disinfecting surfaces is particularly important when traveling or even when going out within one’s own city.

The novel coronavirus is an enveloped virus, which are the easiest type of virus to kill with the correct disinfectant product. An enveloped virus has an outer wrapping called an envelope that is formed when the virus is exiting the cell via budding. The infectiousness of an envelope virus is largely dependent on the envelope. The most well known examples of enveloped virus are the influenza virus, Hepatitis C, and HIV.

The list of disinfectants the EPA recommends include the following:

  • Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
  • Clorox Disinfecting Spray
  • Clorox Multi-Surface Cleaner + Bleach
  • Lysol Clean & Fresh Multi-Surface Cleaner
  • Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist
  • Lysol Heavy-Duty Cleaner Disinfectant Concentrate
  • Oxycide Daily Disinfectant Cleaner
  • Peak Disinfectant Wipes
  • Purell Professional Surface Disinfectant Wipes
