United Airlines announced major cuts in its flight schedule on Wednesday.

The Chicago-based airline said it would cut domestic flights by 10% and international flights by 20%. The cuts will include a 50% reduction in flights to and from Asia, a major part of the airline’s route network. It cited a drop in demand amidst the global coronavirus outbreak as a major factor in the move.

Also on Wednesday, Delta Air Lines announced it would slash the number of Tokyo flights as well as those to Nagoya.

The coronavirus outbreak has caused a severe decline in business and leisure travel and a number of meetings, conferences, and global events have been cancelled as organizers fear possible contagion
