U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson late Monday addressed the nation and announced the most stringent restrictions on life in Britain since the Second World War.

“From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction – you must stay at home,” the prime minister said. “Because the critical thing we must do is stop the disease spreading between households.”

The restrictions call for shops, gyms, libraries, synagogues, and churches to remain closed and will result in the postponement of all social events including weddings.  Funerals will still be allowed to take place.

The prime minister listed four purposes for which people should leave their homes, namely shopping for basic necessities, exercise once a day, going for or providing medical services, or going to work if it is absolutely vital

The police will have the power to break up any gathers and levy fines, he said

“You should not be meeting friends,” he added. “If your friends ask you to meet, you should say ‘No.’ You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home.”
