London City Airport Closes as Coronavirus Continues to Wreaks Havoc on Travel Industry

London City Airport, the 12th busiest in Britain, suspended all operations Wednesday night as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to cause a dramatic decline in demand for flights.

The shutdown of the airport, which served 5.1 million passengers last year, is expected to last through at least April.  The airport will continue to pay its employees during the shutdown.

“At this point in this fast-moving and unprecedented situation, we think this is the responsible thing to do for the safety and wellbeing of our staff, passengers, and everyone associated with the airport,” the airport said in a statement. “All our staff will continue to be employed and will return to work as soon as possible.”

The airport’s central location in the Royal Docks makes it a popular choice for business travelers as well as tourists.

The airport operator said that London City will remain available for use by the government “”in case it can be used to support the emergency services, military or other government agencies.”
