A performance of the new musical “Jagged Little Pill” on Broadway was interrupted after a patron apparently released pepper spray in the theater.

Police and firefighters evacuated patrons from the historic Broadhurst Theatre in the theater district on Saturday after several people were seen standing up and coughing.

The show was in its second act during a matinee performance when the incident happened.

The show’s producers termed the incident an accident.

The show was cancelled “when an audience member’s pepper spray went off inside the theater,” the show said in a statement.  Members of the audience were given information on how to obtain a refund.

The show’s evening performance went on as scheduled.
