Restaurant Review: Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Fried Chicken Sandwich

The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich became instantly famous when it was introduced, went viral, and promptly went out of stock last August, and the fervor it created rivaled Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, an ironic comparison given that the chicken sandwich actually has chicken while the pumpkin spice latte drink didn’t for its first ten years of existence include pumpkin.

While no one on the FBT staff is enamored of fast food, my occasional stops at Popeyes to bring a box of those lovely and very buttery, crisp, almost flaky biscuits with a nice, soft pillowy inside to the office quickly results in an empty box and comments that two boxes would be better.

The powers that be therefore designated me to try the not-quite-year-old sandwich and off I went.

The staff at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is generally friendly and welcoming and the day of my visit was no exception.  The woman taking my order recommended getting the spicy version of the sandwich, explaining it was just a touch of cayenne pepper that made it spicy.

The sandwich isn’t expensive at $3.99.  The recipe places a large piece of Popeyes crispy chicken in a brioche bun.  On the soft, sweet bun are several slices of tart pickles and a creamy, flavorful Cajun sauce, for the spicy version of the sandwich. The classic comes with creamy mayonnaise.

The first bite proved why it is such a hit.

The chicken was served hot and juicy and quite well seasoned.  It was moist on the inside and crispy without being too hard on the outside. The pickles gave a hint of acidity to complement the chicken and the result was an extremely satisfying sandwich. The only change I would have wished for would have been one or two more pickles.

In short, it was a meal of tongue-tingling goodness that I would gladly try again.  Perhaps I’ll even bring a few to the office and see what my FBT colleagues think.
