Guest room at the Wentworth

A trip to Charleston cannot be complete without a visit to the city’s famed Rainbow Row.  Akin to San Francisco’s Painted Ladies, Rainbow Row is a sequence of brightly-colored houses on East Bay Street. Admire the colors and architecture, snap a selfie, and head to charleston.com to learn about the specific history behind each home in the collection.

For a traditional Southern experience, check into the brand new Hotel Bennett, located on the northwestern corner of Marion Square.  The hotel’s rooftop bar and pool provide al fresco dining options with an excellent view of the city.  Rooms feature large deep soaking bathtubs and smart device controls.

The Wentworth Mansion stands grandly above the road with three full stories and dormer windows above.  It is capped by a cupola that offers a 360° view of the islands and peninsulas that constitute modern-day Charleston. A wrought-iron fence, lower level porte-cochere and gas lamps all reinforce the feeling of history about the house.

Ice cream at Kaminsky’s

The Restoration, located on Wentworth Street, combines four buildings that in part date back to the early-to-mid nineteenth century into a thoroughly modern experience. A unique aspect of the hotel is that breakfast is served in each guest room by means of a very elaborate picnic basket delivered at whatever time the guest specifies.

For a dining experience that goes beyond your taste buds, visit 5Church on North Market Street.   The restaurant operates out of a former church, and while the food is top notch (highlights include the refreshing Togarashi salad and heirloom tomato BLT), diners will also enjoy the soaring tall ceilings, stained glass windows, and the entire text of The Art of War inscribed on the ceiling.  The space can also be rented for private events.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, try Kaminsky’s, an all-dessert cafe in the heart of downtown.  The exhaustive menu features house-made cakes, cookies, pies, and confections that can be paired with coffee, tea, or alcoholic beverages. The signature ice cream sandwich is enough to write home about, although you might better enjoy a chocolate raspberry cake à la mode.
