United Airlines Updates Window Shade Policy for Takeoff and Landing

Please open your shades.

United Airlines announced several changes to its window-shade policy during critical phases of flight.

Starting February 1, 2020, passengers will be instructed to keep their window shades open during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

In addition, passengers will be permitted to leave their personal electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets plugged in during those three phases except for passengers in exit rows.

Researchers say that 80% of all plane crashes happen within the first three minutes of takeoff or in the eight minutes before landing.  Having the window shades open helps the cabin crew see outside conditions better in the event of an evacuation.

In addition to leaving shades up, passengers should remain particularly alert just in case and leave their shoes on
