A powerful storm system moving east will bring severe weather to much of the United States starting Friday.

“A large multi-hazard storm is forecast to impact the Plains and Midwest starting today, shifting to the East Coast by early Sunday,” the National Weather Service said.  “Heavy snow and ice will lead to dangerous travel from the Plains to New England.”

The storm will bring a wintry mix to the Chicagoland area.

Meanwhile, the Southern Plains and Deep South will see thunderstorms accompanied by dangerously high winds and tornadoes from Friday into Saturday.

The forecast for the New York metropolitan area is for spring-like weather on Saturday and Sunday with a high of 65° F (18° C) and rain on Sunday.
