The all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is the latest generation in the Wolfsburg automaker’s 40-year run with the seemingly unbeatable compact. It’s also the most premium Jetta ever.

The Jetta – which depending on year and market has been branded as Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta,Jetta City, GLI, Clasico, and Sagiar – gets its name from the Atlantic jet stream (conveniently der Jetstream in German), a name bestowed upon it during a period when the automaker would name its cars after prominent winds and currents.

[Editor’s note: The Passat got its name from the German word for trade wind, das Passatklima, the bora is named after the northern to north-eastern katabatic wind in the Adriatic, and Sirocco is a hot and generally humid African wind that originates over Northern Africa as hot, dry-desert air.]

We’ve driven numerous Jettas over the years, ranging from our long-term 2011 Jetta TDI (ah, diesels, those were the days) to a Jetta SportWagen (which was really a Golf, not a Jetta) to the short-lived 2013 Jetta Hybrid, and they just keep getting better.

The seventh-generation Jetta made its debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It’s based on the automaker’s MQB platform, which the Golf and Atlas are both built on as well.

Our Pyrite Silver Jetta SEL Premium arrived just as the leaves were starting to turn and the reaction was universally the same: Has VW gone Audi?
