Oneworld announced that Latam Airlines Group will leave the airline alliance on May 1, 2020.

The move comes after Delta Air Lines announced plans to acquire a 20% stake in Latam last fall. Delta and Latam will enter into a previously announced codeshare agreement in the first quarter of 2020.

Latam Airlines Group is a Chilean holding company headquartered in Santiago. It has subsidiaries in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru.

All oneworld benefits will continue to be available to Latam passengers through April 30, 2020 except for travel on Royal Air Maroc, which is first joining the alliance on April 1.

Latam is also moving its operations at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport from Terminal 8 to Terminal 4.  Terminal 8 is operated by American Airlines, a oneworld member.  Terminal 4 is the International Arrivals Terminal and Delta Air Lines’ home there.

Delta is investing $1.9 billion for a 20% stake in Latam, and it will invest $350 million to establish the partnership.  Delta will fund the investment with a public tender offer of $16 per share. Following the closing of the transaction, Delta will have a seat on Latam’s board of directors.
