Palace officials called an emergency meeting for Friday at Buckingham Palace after a surprise announcement by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, that they plan to “step back” from their official duties and become “financially independent.”

The royal pair plans to create “progressive new roles” for themselves.

The move has significant implications not only for the couple but also for the younger children of Prince William, namely Princess Charlotte and Prince George, who are not in line for the throne.  Like Prince Harry, the two are highly visible members of the royal family who are unlikely to sit on the throne in the future.

Additional key hurdles to overcome range from how Harry and Meaghan will earn a living to who will pay for their security detail.

On Thursday, the palace released a statement soon saying that “discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

The Sussexes announced plan to split their time between the United Kingdom and an as-yet-undisclosed part of North America when they made their announcement.  They unveiled a new web site of their own design setting forth their goals, using phrases such as “supporting community,” “serving the monarchy,” and “strengthening the Commonwealth.”
