Airlines Cancel Flights to Tehran as Officials Implicate Iran in Ukraine Air Crash

As officials from Ukraine, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States began to piece together evidence that pointed to implicating Iran in a possibly unintended missile attack on Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, airlines serving TehranImam Khomeini International Airport began to cancel flights and suspend service to the capital city.

Ukraine International Airlines suspended all flights to Tehran following the crash of Flight 752.

On Thursday, both Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa diverted their flights to Tehran after it became public that officials believed that Iran had shot down the Ukraine International Airlines flight the previous day.  Lufthansa Flight 600 was en route from Frankfurt to the Iranian capital and turned out approximately two hours into the flight, while Austiran Airlines Flight 871 was en route from Vienna to Tehran and diverted to Sofia.  Both airlines cancelled flights to Tehran for Thursday.

In addition,China Southern canceled its flight from Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to Tehran on Wednesday.  The airline said the decision was made over security concerns.  It is the only Chinese carrier flying to Iran and expressed its condolences to the victims of the crash.
