A major winter storm is heading towards the Plains and Upper Midwest, causing trouble for post-holiday travel by many.

The storm has already brought heavy snow in the mountains of Southern California and will bring snow and blizzard-like conditions to the Northern Plains. Heavy snow is also expected to continue in the Southwest.

The air mass ahead of the storm will remain very warm for late December, leaving the eastern half of the country with almost spring-like weather.  However, some snow and ice will spread to the northern part of New England.

Expect hazardous driving conditions in the areas affected by the severe weather. On Thursday, Interstate 15, the major highway linking Las Vegas with Southern California, was temporarily closed because of poor driving conditions.

As of 10:45 a.m. EST, over 1,400 flights in the United States have been delayed, many due to severe weather conditions in the western half of the country.  That number should increase as the day continues.
