Frequent Business Traveler and The Travelist reporters produced over 20,000 news stories and features in the 2010s, fulfilling our mission to be the most trusted source in travel journalism.

Whether you agree that the decade will end in a matter of days or has one more year to go, here are ten stories that nonetheless had a significant impact on travel during the past ten years.

No sooner had the 2010s begun than the Eyjafjallajökull volcano unexpectedly erupted and created travel chaos as well as a pronunciation challenge for non-Icelandic speakers everywhere.  The volcano erupted in March 2010 with little consequence but a subsequent eruption on April 14, 2010 triggered volcanic ash plumes that extended several miles up into the atmosphere, leading to air traffic disruption in northwest Europe from April 15 through April 21 and again in May.  The disruptions included the closure of airspace over many parts of Europe and affected tens of thousands of travelers.

Perhaps the bumpiest of recent airline mergers, United’s 2010 marriage to Continental started with discussions in 2006 and closed in October 2010.  The two carriers began merging their operations in 2011 and began operating under a single air operator’s certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration in November 2011.  In March 2012, United and Continental merged their IT and passenger service systems, although this required some time to finesse.  It wasn’t until October 1, 2018, that United and Continental flight attendants began working together as one workgroup, however. Indeed, the path to an integrated workforce had not been smooth.  In June 2019, the parent company of United changed its name from United Continental Holdings to United Airlines Holdings, removing one of the last vestiges of the merger with Continental.  Only the Continental globe logo now remains.
