Review: Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München, Munich, Germany

Just when you start to think that one of the best hotels in the world cannot top past experiences, it happens. But allow me to set the scene.

After a short flight from London in British Airways Club Europe, I arrived at Munich Airport and took the S-Bahn to the city center.  It was a glorious fall day and the walk from the Marienplatz S-Bahn Haltestelle to the hotel on the bustling Maximilianstraße made me feel at home again.

Entering the lobby of the Vier Jahreszeiten is akin to walking into a living time capsule, one that places you inside one of the grand hotels of Europe, almost expecting Dr. Otternschlag to be seated there. “People come. People go, nothing ever happens” he says in the film classic “Grand Hotel.”

No matter how many times I enter the lobby, I stop to take in the mosaic glass ceiling that depicts the four seasons, the hotel name in German, which only gets better with age.

Checking in at the magnificent front desk is always an experience. The staff welcomes one as an honored guest, be it a first stay or a 50th (in my case it is closer to 50th at this point). “Herzlichen Willkommen, Herr Spira,” the front desk manager proclaimed.

I was then informed of a new amenity the hotel offers its guests, which is the use of one of the hotel’s two AMG Mercedes (since then, the hotel has partnered with BMW and now offers day-long test drives of the BMW i8).

But first I proceeded to my room, the gears churning while I planned a day trip to Salzburg.
