At least five people were stabbed near London Bridge during a Friday afternoon rampage, police said.  Two of the victims later died of their wounds.

Metropolitan Police said in a statement it had responded “to a stabbing at premises near to London Bridge.”  The assailant, Usman Khan, was said to have been wearing a fake suicide vest and was shot dead by police.

Khan had been released from prison on license, or parole, after serving a portion of his sentence for terrorist offenses.   He was attending a conference on offender rehabilitation when he threatened to blow up the vest and then started to attack people with knifes.

The London Ambulance Service said “We have now declared a major incident and have a number of crews at the scene in London Bridge,” on Twitter.

The nearby Tube Station was closed while police continue the investigation.
