IMG_8483 2Southwest Airlines announced the addition of Apple Pay support in its iOS mobile app.

The move enables travelers to pay for tickets, in-flight meals, baggage fees, and other ancillary services using Apple’s mobile wallet.  More importantly, it allows travelers to conduct transactions without having to store their payment details such as credit card numbers in a commercial database.

“Providing modern digital payment solutions to our customers is critical,” said Christopher Priebe, who heads up payment and risk at the airline. “The launch of Apple Pay enhances our ability to sell flights, as well as ancillary products using one of the most widely-used digital wallets in North America.”

Apple Pay made its start in 2015 in the United States. Today it is available in numerous countries including Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, as well as Hong Kong.

Apple Pay is accepted by a wide variety of retailers including coffee houses, grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, hotels, pharmacies, restaurants, and specialty stores, as well as by many iPhone apps.
