Apple released the next version of its iPhone software, iOS 13, on Thursday.  Available as a free download, the new version has multiple new features and updates to Apple apps.

The update arrived a day ahead of the release of the new Apple iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.  The update is compatible with the iPhone 6s and later iPhones.

There are few major changes to the user interface, but there are some significant additional features, such as Dark Mode, which is designed to make using practically any app on the iPhone easier on one’s eyes, new photo and video editing options, new parental controls, and new Memoji stickers.  The new Sign in with Apple feature is also part of iOS 13. It’s intended to add a level of privacy when logging into apps and websites by creating alias to an e-mail address so it’s not divulged to the website or app.

One big change is that Apple has separated the iPad operating system from that of the iPhone. The dramatically improved iPadOS will be released next week.

Despite the hoopla of the arrival of iOS 13, iOS 13.1 is already on the way and will be available next Tuesday. It adds ETA-sharing in Apple Maps, improvements to AirDrop, AirPod audio sharing, and some bug fixes.
