Travelers trying to reach New York’s LaGuardia Airport by car encountered major delays on Thursday, which was the second busiest day in the airport’s history.

The near gridlock conditions came as a result of the combination of ongoing construction delays plus extra traffic following the cancellation of 300 flights on Wednesday to to the severe weather.

“Due to heavy traffic at LGA, please allow extra time when traveling to the airport,” the airport said on its website.

Some travelers, fearing they would miss their flights, got out of their cars and walked up the exit ramps to get to their terminal.

Part of the congestion comes from preparations for the relocation of two exits on the Grand Central Parkway, which will take place Saturday at 6 a.m. local time The two exits to be relocated are on the westbound side of the highway, namely Exits 6 and 7, which lead to Terminals C and D and Terminal B, the Central Terminal, respectively.
