Trains continued to run after the Port Authority Terminal was shut down.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City was closed after a truck plummeted over a railing onto a highway on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred just as thousands of holiday travelers were converging on the Port Authority, the busiest bus terminal in the country.

The orange garbage truck landed nose first on the westbound lanes of Route 495, which carries traffic flowing out of the Lincoln Tunnel from Manhattan, injuring a number of people including the driver of the truck.

Buses that depart from the Port Authority Bus Terminal use the Lincoln Tunnel to get to New Jersey.

The accident severely disrupted the holiday travel plans for those heading out of Manhattan.

The terminal reopened to passengers on a limited basis at 5 p.m. Vehicle traffic was still being diverted to the Holland Tunnel and George Washington Bridge. New Jersey Transit and PATH trains as well as New York Waterway ferries accepted bus tickets from stranded riders during the closure.
