The Toyota Corolla’s reputation is that of a solid, reliable, economical, and boring sedan since its launch in the 1970s. Back then, Toyota called its hatch a Liftback but, with the launch of the aggressively styled 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE, the “h” word is in.

Our Oxide Bronze Metallic hatch arrived on a warm spring afternoon and quickly became the center of attention, thanks to its rakishly good looks.

It soon became clear that this isn’t just any hatchback, nor is it a crossover masquerading as such. The Corolla is as much a hatch as the original VW Rabbit, a three-door hatch, and its sharp styling and reasonably sporty handling make it a refreshing replacement for the outgoing Corolla iM.

Indeed, it’s longer, wider, and lower than the iM and it comes with a reasonably full complement of Toyota’s safety features.

The Corolla hatch rides on the new TNGA platform that the new Corolla sedan – due next year – will also sit on.

Step aboard and you’ll find a downright good-looking interior with soft-touch materials on the dash, upper door panels, armrests, and center console.
