IMG_2647 (1)United Airlines piloted the idea of a fully sustainable flight that combines zero cabin waste, sustainable aviation biofuel, and eco-friendly operational procedures.

The airline termed it “the most eco-friendly commercial flight of its kind in the history of aviation.”

The Flight for the Planet, as the airline called it, departed the airline’s hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport with the destination being Los Angeles International Airport, where United has implemented eco-friendly operational changes.

The flight was operated using a Boeing 737-900ER, which is capable of carrying passengers 77 miles on a gallon of fuel. The airline used a 30/70 blend of low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel from World Energy along with traditional aviation fuel.

United replaced its traditional snack service in coach with a plated service using a combination of recyclable and compostable serviceware, including a hot beverage cup made from recyclable paper. In first, United used reusable serviceware but it eliminated paper napkin rings on its silverware on the flight. The airline had previously eliminated non-recyclable stirring sticks and cocktail picks on all flights.
