United Airlines ConnectionSaver Uses Technology to Hold Connecting Flights for Passengers

IMG_8489 2United Airlines announced ConnectionSaver, a new technology that will automatically identify flights that should be held for connecting passengers provided it won’t inconvenience other passengers.

The airline announced a pilot of the technology in February of this year and later expanded the trial to Chicago. During the pilot phase, the system helped over 14,400 passengers with tight connections make a connecting flight.

The technology looks at multiple factors including the time it will take a passenger to walk between gates and what impact a delay might have on other flights and passengers. Over 15,000 travelers make connecting flights on United each day, the airline said.

In addition to helping connecting passengers with tight connections, the technology will also dispatch personalized text messages to all connecting passengers who opt into the service with directions on how to get to the next gate and how long the walk should take.
