IMG_9645United Airlines is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing in partnership with Space Center Houston and NASA.

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first space explorers to set foot on the moon. Armstrong later joined United’s board of directors.

“Not only is the Apollo 11 mission rooted in Houston’s past, it also became part of United’s history when Astronaut Neil Armstrong later served on our board of directors,” said Rodney Cox, the airline’s vice president for its Houston hub. “Knowing the deep connection both United and Houston have to this historic mission, we are honored to commemorate this remarkable accomplishment with our customers.”

The airline’s celebration centers around its hub at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and several restaurants in the airport will offer cuisine inspired by what the Apollo 11 astronauts ate on their mission, including Tang-infused cocktails. Travelers will be treated to photography from the Apollo 11 mission at the gate lounges in Terminal C-North and Space Center Houston will install pop-up Apollo 11-themed science labs on July 9 through July 11 throughout the airport.

On the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s liftoff, July 17, United will operate a special space-themed commemorative flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Finally, United will offer 17 space-related programs on its in-flight entertainment system starting July 1.
