Review: Amtrak Northeast Corridor Quiet Car Washington, D.C. – New York City

The best things in life are occasionally free and one thing that regular train travelers in the United States know about is the free upgrade to Amtrak’s Quiet Car.

Available on all trains in the Northeast Corridor including the Amtrak Acela and the Northeast Regional, the Quiet Car is available to all passengers on a first-come first- served basis. There are no reserved seats in the Quiet Car and, aside from its location on the train and the Quiet Car signs hanging from the ceiling, it is no different than any other unreserved car.

The signs for the Quiet Car – and it’s important to note that it’s a “quiet” car, not a silent car – show a hand with an extended index finger placed over a pair of lips, with the words “Quiet Car – Please refrain from loud talking or using cell phones in this car” to the right.

The Northeast Corridor runs from Boston through Providence, New Haven, New York City, Philadelphia through Wilmington, and Baltimore, to Washington, D.C. There are branches to Springfield, Massachusetts, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and several cities in Virginia that are not part of the Northeast Corridor although there is frequent service to those cities from routes that operate largely on the corridor.

It’s important to note that trains in the Northeast Corridor typically operate in snowstorms and rain and fog, conditions that cause delays and cancellations for the shuttle flights that operate between the various cities.

On the Acela Express, the Quiet Car is adjacent to the first-class car; on the Northeast Regional, it is adjacent to the business-class car. All seats are in a 2-2 configuration. It’s available on other routes as well, including Amtrak’s Keystone Service, which runs from Harrisburg to Philadelphia, and Hiawatha Service, which runs between Chicago and Milwaukee, as well as on select Capitol Corridor, Wolverine, and Blue Water lines.
