JetBlue to Offset All Carbon Dioxide Emissions in June

JetBlue Airways said it plans to pay to offset all carbon dioxide emissions that would be incurred by its customers flying this month.

The New York-based airline will purchase the carbon offsets from the Carbonfund.org Foundation, a non-profit that offers carbon offsetting and greenhouse gas reduction options.

Carbonfund.org and JetBlue have been working together for over 11 years, a partnership which has resulted in the offset of over 2.3 billion pounds (1 million metric tons) of CO2 emissions. The move by JetBlue will result in the offsetting of over 700,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions in June alone.

“While we work toward renewable jet fuel options and ‘carbon-neutral’ flying, offsets are one small way we’re addressing emissions,” said Sophie Mendelsohn, who heads the airline’s governance and sustainability activities, in a statement, acknowledging that it’s impossible today for an airline avoid CO2 emissions,
