Uber, Lyft Drivers Plan Strike for Wednesday
Drivers for Uber as well as for competitor Lyft plan to go off-line for two hours Wednesday morning just as the rush hour is beginning.
The job action is intended to coincide with Uber’s planned initial public offering on Thursday.
The drivers are protesting what they see as unfair working conditions, including job security and working conditions, and want a limit on how much ride-hailing companies can take as a commission from each trip.
Drivers in New York City will strike starting at 7 a.m. local time, according to a statement from the New York Taxi Workers Alliance. The strike is intended “to stand up to Uber’s greed,” said the organization’s executive director, Bhairavi Desai.
A similar action is planned in numerous other cities including Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
