After three generations and seven decades, Volkswagen will end production of the Beetle come next year.

The VW tradition of a fabulous send-off, however, continues with the 2019 Beetle Final Edition SE. Just like in 1979, when the United States said “Auf Wiedersehen” to the final original Käfer, or Bug, with triple-white cabrios, the 2019 Final Edition comes with special trim, equipment, and colors as both a coupe or droptop.

But is it really the final Beetle?

Kremlin-watcher like VW watchers here at FBT believe another Beetle may be around the corner.

“The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” said Hinrich Woebcken, who was CEO of Volkswagen Group of America at the time the sad news was delivered. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it.”
