IMG_3624 (1)In-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo announced plans on Wednesday for a new air-to-ground 5G network.

The new network, which is expected to go into service in 2021, will serve commercial airliners as well as business aviation aircraft over the continental United States and Canada.

Gogo plans to use its existing infrastructure of approximately 250 towers as well as unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4 GHz range in conjunction with proprietary technology the company has developed.

The 5G technology, Gogo said, will have a lower cost of operation as well as lower latency. Gogo said it will offer an easy upgrade path to airlines that are existing air-to-ground customers.
