Delta Air Lines announced a program Wednesday under which members of its SkyMiles program can reclaim their elite status with the airline if a major life event caused the member to temporarily suspend traveling.

With the Reclaim My Status program, the airline is offering what effectively is a status challenge under which the status would be restored.

The airline said that the program was created based on feedback from members who temporarily had to curtail travel in a variety of instances such as due to emergency or planned surgery or the birth of a child.

Members would apply online and explain the reason travel had been suspended. If approved, the member would receive elite status for three months and would then have to meet a minimum travel and spend threshold for that period.

Delta cited such life events as becoming a parent, serious illness, a change in jobs, and the need to care for a family member as some of the many reasons members might cite in the Reclaim My Status program.
