All Nippon Airways announced the reconfiguration of seats on some of its wide-body aircraft as well as the introduction of a flight attendant-to-flight attendant communications system.

The airline is renovating eight Boeing 777-200s and 11 Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The work will result in improved comfort in coach, the airline says. The airline is adding seven premium-economy seats on its domestic 777-200s, resulting in a total of 28, while reducing the number of seats in coach from 384 to 364. On its domestic 787-8 Dreamliners, the airline is adding 16 premium-economy seats, also making the total 28, while reducing the number of coach seats from 323 to 284.

The new seats in the premium-economy section will feature a 15” in-flight entertainment display, a rotating table as well as a side table, electrical and USB outlets, and a privacy partition between seats. The new coach seats will feature an ergonomic design, an 11.6” display, a separate beverage holder, and individual USB outlets.

“ANA strives to set the standard for comfort on all our flights, and few things play as big a part in passenger comfort as the seat,” said Hideki Kunugi, an executive vice president at the airline.

In addition, the airline is introducing a group communications system from Bonx that uses in-ear communications devices controlled by a proprietary app that will allow flight attendants to speak to one another without using the plane’s intercom system.

The wireless system, which allows the flight attendant to hear ambient sounds, has a built-in microphone, is voice activated, and is water and shock resistant. It will debut on the airline’s new Airbus A380 aircraft, used on flights to Honolulu.

“By making it easier for flight attendants to communicate with each other, they will be better equipped to meet passenger needs,” said Akihiko Miura, an executive vice president at ANA.
