The airline industry predicts that a record 257.4 million passengers will take to the skies on U.S. airlines during the 2019 summer travel season, 8.6 million more than last year and approximately 2.8 million per day.

Airlines for America, the trade association representing most U.S. airlines, said Tuesday that there will be a 3.4% increase in the number of U.S. airline passengers traveling worldwide between June 1 and August 31.

“Air travel is the nation’s safest form of transportation, and it is now more affordable than ever before,” said the group’s chief economist John Heimlich. “U.S. carriers are making airline flights more and more accessible, so it’s no surprise that more and more Americans are flying.”

The cost of a ticket, adjusted for inflation, was down for a fourth year in 2018, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, with the average price of a domestic flight at $350, a decrease of 15.9% from 2014 and the lowest average inflation-adjusted fare since the agency began tracking this information in 1995.
