A blaze at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris in the early evening hours caused its iconic spire and roof collapse as the fire continued to rage.

The fire broke out at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris Monday evening.   The cathedral’s fire alarm sounded at 6:30 p.m., a spokesman at the cathedral told reporters.

French authorities said that no one was injured in the blaze and that the cause of the fire remained unknown, although a major renovation project was underway.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1160 and it was largely completed by 1260.
