The passenger who jumped off an aircraft at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Friday morning first touched the faces of other passengers and sprayed them with an unknown substance, police said.

The passenger “randomly touched the faces of other passengers” and sprayed several with an unknown substance, the Phoenix police department said in a statement.

Crew members on American Airlines Flight 1346, which arrived from Minneapolis at 6:12 a.m. Friday morning, asked law enforcement to meet the aircraft because of the passenger’s unusual behavior. Before police could arrive, but after the aircraft had arrived at the gate, the passenger had made his escape.

“American had requested law enforcement meet flight 1346 upon arrival in Phoenix due to a disruptive passenger,” the airline said in a statement. “Once the flight arrived at the gate, the passenger opened one of doors and jumped off the aircraft.”

Officials said that the man, who was not identified, fell approximately 10’ (3 m) to the ground. He was detained by airport workers and then taken into custody by Phoenix police officers.

The passengers who were touched and sprayed declined to press charges, the police department said.
