San Francisco International Airport said it unexpectedly closed a runway Thursday morning to allow for repair work after the discovery of a pothole.

The runway, 28L, was shut down at 8 a.m. as was an adjacent runway, 1R, which will also be closed during the repair work.

“Expect delays,” the airport said in a tweet at 11:30 a.m. local time. “28L closed for repair.”

While the airport originally said that 1R would be closed from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., it later said that 1R would reopen in the afternoon, albeit at an unspecified point in time.
