Volvo to Limit New Vehicle Speeds to 112 mph Starting Next Year

IMG_2696Volvo announced that, starting in 2020, the top speed of every new Volvo will be 112 mph (180 km/h).

The move is part of the automaker’s Vision 2020 program, which focuses on zero fatalities.

Volvo feels that, even with every currently available safety feature, technology alone won’t protect against injury in cases where speeds above 112 mph were involved.

“The problem with speeding is that above certain speeds, in-car safety technology and smart infrastructure design are no longer enough to avoid severe injuries and fatalities in the event of an accident,” the automaker said.

The move has been likened to the gentlemen’s agreement amongst German automakers that limits virtually all of their cars to 155 mph (250 km/h).
