Few travelers seem to give on-time performance as much weight in choosing an airline as cost and comfort, but on time arrival doesn’t happen four out of five times.

For those who want to have the greatest chance of arriving punctually, Hawaiian Airlines is the way to go. It chalked up its 15th successive year as the nation’s most punctual airline with the release of the Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Report.

Hawaiian, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, reported an on-time arrival for 87.5% of its flights, followed by Delta Air Lines, which reported 86.1% of flights arrived on time.

In third place was low-cost carrier Spirit, with an 84.5% on-time arrival rate.

The overall average was 80%.

The world’s largest airline, American Airlines, posted a 78% figure for on-time arrivals, slightly ahead of the nation’s second largest airline, United, which reported 77.6%.  Southwest Airlines reported a figure of 78.8%, as did Allegiant.

Alaska Airlines, which began to operate flights under a single operating certificate at the start of 2018 following its merger with Virgin America, reported an on-time arrival rate of 80.6

At the bottom of the list were Frontier Airlines, with an on-time arrival figure of 74.5%, along with JetBlue Airways, with the same figure.

The agency’s figures include flights by branded codeshare partner airlines when the flight is operated under that carrier’s brand for such flights, including American Eagle for American Airlines and United Express for United Airlines.
