IMG_4377Starbucks announced multiple changes to its loyalty program, Starbucks Rewards.

The changes, which go into effect on April 16, will allow members to earn rewards immediately upon joining. They will continue to earn two Stars for every $1 spent.

The company is, however, replacing the current reward redemptions structure with a new tiered program.

Under the new program, the number of stars a Starbucks Rewards members will pay will vary based on the item being requested. Twenty-five stars will get members a drink customization such as an extra espresso shot or flavor, while 50 stars will cover a brewed hot coffee, hot tea, or some bakery items. For what Starbucks calls a “handcrafted” drink as well as for a hot breakfast or yoghurt parfait, the cost will be 150 stars, while 200 stars will be the price of a lunch sandwich, protein box, or salad. Finally, members can purchase packaged coffee as well as select merchandise for 400 stars.

“These new updates put choice in the hands of our customers and a personal touch they can only get from Starbucks,” said Matthew Ryan, the company’s chief marketing officer.

Members will continue to be eligible for free coffee and tea refills as well as a birthday “treat.”
