IMG_1620Much of the social media world was enveloped by a blackout as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp remained largely inaccessible by users for much of Wednesday into Thursday.

Facebook took to its rival, Twitter, to discuss the outage, as did many of its users.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps,” Facebook said on Twitter late Wednesday. “We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp. An outage of more than a few hours is unprecedented by such a large organization.

Millions of users – including Frequent Business Traveler’s social media team – were unable to post updates and were greeted by non-specific error messages.

“Sorry, something went wrong,” the system repeatedly responded after an attempt to post a link to a story on the magazine’s website.

Others have reported to have received a message that said the site is down for “required maintenance.”

The disruption seemed to be abating as of the early morning hours but as of 10:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, the outage is still fairly widespread according to Down Detector, a website that follows outage patterns.
