IMGP4628The U.S. secretary of transportation asked on Tuesday for an inquiry into the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification of the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Elaine Chao, the transportation secretary, asked the Department of Transportation’s inspector general to conduct an audit of the certification process.

The 737 Max 8 was approved under new rules that allow the manufacturer, Boeing, to self-certify part of the process.

Boeing, which has previously defended the certification process, said it would cooperate with the inquiry. The 737 Max “was certified in accordance with the identical FAA requirements and processes that have governed certification of all previous new airplanes and derivatives,” it said in a statement.
