Brexit Update: EU Leader Says There’s a ‘Special Place in Hell’ for Brexiters without a Plan
European Council President Donald Tusk said there would be “a special place in hell” for politicians who promoted Brexit without any plan as to how it would be delivered.
The comment serves to indicate just how strained Brexit negotiations had become.
In a tweet, Tusk said: “I’ve been wondering what that special place in hell looks like, for those who promoted #Brexit, without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely.”
There are 49 days to go until Britain leaves the European Union and no one – not U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May and certainly not Mr. Tusk – know how it will happen, if at all.
The European Union, Tusk said, is not open to renegotiating the withdrawal agreement.
“Today our most important task is to prevent a no-deal scenario,” he said to reporters in Brussels Wednesday.
UK Prime Minster Theresa May traveled to Northern Ireland on a mission to seek a way forward on the Irish backstop, while Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that, in the event Britain crashes out of the bloc, the two nations would have to reach a bilateral customs agreement to prevent border infrastructure.
